What’s in a name

A thousand pardons for not blogging in a week! Things have been pretty busy at EWI Works – and that’s good. Great to know that even in these times, all of you are still putting ergonomics and the health and safety of your employees first. It’s also that time of year when everyone is feeling “spring” in the air. There are a few of us at EWI who will be away periodically for the next few weeks on holidays but rest assured, there will always be someone available here to return your calls.

This blog will be a fun one before I leave on holidays. I often get asked the question “What does EWI stand for?”. Sometimes I’m asked “What is eee-wee-works?” Really, that is a very good question.

Over 18 years ago, Linda Miller worked as an ergonomist with the WCB in Edmonton, Alberta and prior to that, performing tasks as an occupational therapist at the Calgary General Hospital. Armed with this experience and a Master’s Degree in Environmental Design, she started an ergonomic consulting firm called Ergo Works Inc. Linda acted as both owner and ergonomic consultant at that time. As the demand for her expert advice and training sessions grew, so did the company. The name became shortened to EWI on our contracts and proposals and as the company’s services expanded to clients across North America (and some in Europe), EWI Works International Inc. was born.

Today, EWI Works International has offices in both Calgary and Edmonton and now provides services in British Columbia. As for the name, we still like to use EWI. There’s a nice ring to it and our clients have come to know that name as providing unique and results driven ergonomic services.

Have a great week everyone! When I get back, I’ll talk about how human ingenuity provided for an interesting assessment. I’m also reading up on aging workers – everything from cognitive abilities to using progressive lenses at the computer!
