Continuing improvement through continuing education

All of the EWI consultants place high importance on continuing education in order to expand their knowledge in ergonomics as well as various related fields. The world of health and safety is constantly evolving and in order to improve upon methods for the clients, we fully believe it is vital to stay on top of our game. That’s why, at the end of February, Linda had the opportunity to take the Human Factors Series in Washingon, DC, held by the National Transportation Safety Board. For four days, Linda attended courses in “Cognitive Interviewing for Accident Investigators” and “Investigating Human Fatigue Factors” and came back with a boat load of information to incorporate into our consulting programs and procedures.seal1

The cognitive interviewing course was conducted by Ronald P Fisher, PhD, and Professor of Psychology at Florida International University. Dr. Fisher, an expert in memory and cognition, taught the most effective means of gathering information from a witness surrounding an accident/incident – from conducting the “Question-less interview” to overcoming barriers when interviewing. The seminars covered such topics as Momory and Cognition, Witness Questioning and included accident case studies.

“Investigating Human Fatigue Factors” covered the NTSB’s “Methodology for Investigating Operator Fatigue in a Transportation Accident”, which could very easily be converted into a means to determining fatigue factors of an incident in various industries. Fatigue often plays a factor in onsite accidents from long haul drivers to shift workers in a factory – even accidents in the home. In times where many of us are burning the candle at both ends, the information that Linda gained from the seminar will be invaluable.

I’ve studied cognitive psychology and the effects of fatigue on mental alertness and I found the materials that Linda brought back to the office particularly interesting. I can’t wait to work with Linda on developing checklists and guides based on this information. Our clients will find it extrememly useful.

Keep safe!
