One product that we have been recommending quite often lately is the compact keyboard. Their size is a great solution for office workers who have a smaller frame and/or narrow shoulders. For these individuals, using a standard width keyboard can often lead to discomfort in the hands, arms and wrists.
For example, an office assessment was conducted recently on an individual who had surgery on one hand and was scheduled for surgery on the other after being diagnosed with bi-lateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This individual wanted to ensure her workstation would not cause further issues. One of the problems observed was that due to her smaller frame, the regular sized keyboard caused her to reach excessively for the mouse – causing awkward shoulder postures nad therefore, discomfort.
In addtition to workstation adjustments, some equipment and work practice changes, two compact keyboards were recommended for her to trial. One was the Compact SK3300U (11.81″ wide) and the other was the Compact Financial 5100 Series, which includes the number pad (15.75″ wide). Both keyboards are equipped with full size keys. Not only are these compact keyboards narrow enough to accommodate both a keyboard and mouse for a smaller frame, but they also sit lower to the work surface, helping to prevent wrist extension.
The key to good ergonomic practices is understanding we are not all built the same way and it’s important to realize there are products out there that suit many body types and sizes rather than attempt to “fit” the worker into standard workstations and equipment. The result will always be a happier, healthier, more productive worker.
Although we don’t sell product, we would be more than happy to help you look for the right fitting keyboard, chair or other piece of equipment. If you’re interested in the compact keyboard, click on the links provided above or go to www.ergocanada.com.
